Tactile Graphics:
How to create Braille-embossed or Swell-Form tactile graphics

braille reading

Braille Graphic

You will need:

  • The Duxbury Braille Translator program
  • Juliet Embosser or similar machine
  1. Contact Ben Wentworth at Tactile Learning and provide your email address; the Braille file will be attached to a return E-mail.
  2. Save the Braille file to your desk top, then copy to a 3.5 floppy disk or burn the file onto a CD-ROM.
  3. The file may then be opened with The Duxbury Braille Translator program and embossed with a Juliet Embosser or similar machine.

The Duxbury Braille file for the Braille Quark Cards should be used to produce the cards used in the Student Activity: Quarks - Making Arrangements. These cards have been made with a boarder around the Quark symbol for each card. A double lined boarder will be found on one edge of each card to indicate the edge that should be nearest the individual using the cards. This eliminates the need to read each symbol in order for the user to line the cards up properly.

On a toner-style (instead of an ink cartridge-style) copier, copy your Tactile Card image onto Swell-Paper™ and run it through the Swell-Form graphics machine.

Using a lower heat setting and running the Swell-Paper™ through twice gives excellent results without changing the blank background of the graphic.

Note: An ink cartridge-style printer will work; however, the background ends up with a slight texture.

In the event that you do not have access to a Swell-Form graphics machine and would like to order pre-made copies, please contact Ben Wentworth at Tactile Learning.
